Human Relief Foundation project in northern Iraq supports refugee reintegration

The socioeconomic reintegration of returnees from Syria's Al Hol refugee camp, administered by Human Relief Foundation (HRF), is a focused effort to bring stability and security to communities in Iraq’s Anbar, Ninewa, Kirkuk, and Salah al-Din governorates.

Running from February to December 2024, the project aims to help people rebuild their lives—especially vulnerable community members, families associated with ISIL, and returnees from Al Hol—by offering livelihood opportunities and mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). This initiative hopes to reach 750 participants, with at least half being women and nearly a third being youth.

The project includes livelihood training, robust MHPSS support, and the renovation of two MHPSS centres to ensure quality care for participants and another 400 community members. An impact assessment will evaluate the project’s success and guide future efforts, aiming to strengthen resilience, economic empowerment, and overall community stability.

As part of HRF’s cash-for-work program, 120 workers are now rejuvenating the gardens at Mosul University. Through cleaning, renovations, and the planting of new trees and flowers, these gardens are coming to life with the help of both university professors and students. This collaborative project inspires student involvement and care for the new greenery, while experienced agricultural beneficiaries share tips, giving students hands-on guidance in cultivating a vibrant campus landscape.
